High Country HOG Chapter Road Captains training

Studying hard. On Saturday the 5th of March, Deron Mason, Lead Road Captain and his trusty assistant, Fred Johnson, held our first Road Captain Training of the year. The 3 hour training was held at the Moose Lodge in Longmont and we owe a large debt of gratitude for use of the class room and for that matter, all of the events we hold here.

Thanks to the Loyal Order of Moose. We kicked off at 9:00 AM with a round of introductions and reasons for attending the training. A video from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation on Group Riding was next. After the video we discussed what we liked and didn’t like in the film as well as what we actually practice and don’t practice as recommended. We created a list of areas that the group felt the chapter needed to work on and improve.

On that list were items like: better organization of rides by pre-planning and the use of maps, hand signals, and over all, better communication. From here we got right into the nuts and bolts, chrome ones of course, of what we were here to accomplish. We discussed the duties of the Road Captains, as per HOG. Followed by organizing a ride, road captain supplies, duties before the ride, pre-ride huddle, the ride itself and an emergency plan of action. Within each of these topics were a lot of very important subjects.

As a group we started the process of adopting which hand signals the chapter will use. It was also decided that each rider needs an emergency information card that could also have the hand signals on the other side. We want to build a data bank of ride maps that is available on our web site. It was also suggested that we devote a chapter meeting to group riding.

By noon it was considerably warmer outside and we wanted to get out and practice what we had learned. The class was a success as the instructors and students came away with a lot more than we started with. Thanks to all that attended, 31 of us total. We are hoping to hold this class again in the near future. For those of you that were unable to attend, please let Deron or Fred know that you are interested and an idea of when would work best for you.
