WOW! What-a-Ride!
WOW! What-a-Ride! How many times have you
thought this exact statement, and wished that you could share the ride
with all of your friends. High Country Chapter Colorado #422
hopes that through these pages, you can read about other members great
rides, and then add a few of your WOWs.
Most favorite rides - My original idea was most favorite
roads, but sometimes, its more than just the road, its the weather,
the camaraderie, the 'escape from work', or just the way that you were
one with your bike and the road. For example, I always love Hwy
550, the "Million Dollar Highway", Hwy 16A, south of Mt Rushmore
in the Black Hills National Forest, Hwy 191
south of Springerville, to Morenci, AZ in the Apache-Sitgreaves National
Forest, and Hwy 128 from Cisco to Moab, UT along the Colorado river.

Steve S - WOW - La Sal Mountain loop
road (Moab, UT)
The
La Sal Mountain Loop road features a wide variety
of canyon country scenery. The 60-mile long route begins by
following the Colorado River (Hwy 128), then it approaches
the La Sal Mountains via Castle Valley. The route through
the Manti-La Sal National Forest offers great views of the
12,000 foot plus peaks and the red rock canyons far below.
Completion of the loop brings the motorist back to Moab via
U. S. Highway 191.

This is a road that is a throw back to the way that roads used
to be built, it has virtually no signs, (who needs a pesky sign
on every corner telling you that its a 15 mph curve anyway?), 14%
grades at times, sharp hair-pin curves, blind corners, and the very
best spectacular views. I swear that I had a neck ache from looking
around at the scenery so much! With all the great roads/rides in
the Moab area its easy to overlook this favorite of the local bikers.
Ride
north from Moab on U.S. Highway 191 and turn right onto Scenic
Byway 128 just before the bridge. Arches National Park is
located along the north side of the river. Turn right and
go about 6 miles east of the U.S. 191/UT 128 junction, to
the Castle Valley road, turn right and follow the main loop.
Riding up Castle Valley, the Priest and Nuns and Castle Rock
are situated on your left about 4 miles from Scenic Byway
128. If these formations look familiar, it's because they
have been "in the movies." The La Sal Mountain Loop
Road turnoff is 11 miles from Scenic Byway 128. Turn right. |
| As
you enter the National Forest, notice how the vegetation changes
as you gain elevation. Pinyon and juniper trees give way to
oak, then to larger pines and aspen. The highest timbered
areas are covered with spruce and fir.
|
Be sure to stop at the overlooks along the road. A 5-mile long
graded dirt side road leads to the Forest Service campground at
Warner Lake. The campground has drinking water, toilets, picnic
tables, and fire grills. (Camping and picnic fees charged.)
After the Warner Lake turnoff, the Loop Road descends into Mill
Creek Canyon and then climbs again before starting its descent to
Moab. The tour route rejoins U.S. Highway 191 south of Moab.

Fred
Johnson, Lee Hull, and a host of others,
(Sturgis -Yellowstone)
Heading
to Sturgis
The annual trip to sturgis can become so much
more exciting when combined with another journey, and what
better place than Yellowstone. The scenery is spectacular,
devils tower, Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains, Chief
Joseph scenic highway, to Cooke City, MT. Follow the journey
of our 2005 Director and a group of chapter members through
pictures.
Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, also known as Sunlight
Basin Road, is an often missed yet unforgettable alternative
to Bear tooth Highway. Enjoy this magnificent byway by taking
your time to pull out in turnouts and take in unbelievable
vistas of over 1,000 foot granite walls and to catch up on
your Native American history. |
