Worried about your bike breaking down? Steve's towing experiences

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience the world of motorcycle towing firsthand, my cam position sensor failed in New Mexico. There is a lesson to be learned that may save you valuable $$$. Lucky for me, I broke down of Friday, and was able to get back on the road Sat. afternoon , after only damaging my wallet to the tune of $400. Read more here.

A Message from the 2004 High Country HOG Chief Road Captain Phil Dog

ROAD TIPS & TRICKS FROM - PHIL DOG -ROAD CAPTAIN
HIGH COUNTRY H-D/BUELL FREDERICK

I really like riding this time of the year, maybe more so then the rest. I say that now until it's some other time of the year and I like then a little more then now too. This time of the year presents a few more challenges to us riders that we don't usually have to deal with such as extreme cold temps, gravel, black ice, magnesium chloride and top it off with other drivers that seam to forget motorcycles exist in winter months. With these extra challenges heaped on top of risk of riding a motorcycle to begin with the reward and satisfaction of getting there in one piece safe and sound is nearly overwhelming. How can we get past these challenges so we can ride year round?

HOG Events

H.O.G. members from all over the world are invited to attend Harley Owners GroupĀ® events and activities throughout the year. But to join in on the fun and take advantage of the exclusive benefits that membership brings, you first have to join the club!

U.S. National HOG Rallies
The Harley Owners Group sponsors stationary and touring rallies throughout the United States. Enjoy riding, H.O.G. merchandise, and many great activities. U.S. National H.O.G. Rally registration is processed at the U.S. H.O.G. office. If you couldn't join the rallies as they were happening, take a look now and see all of the fun, camaraderie, and scenery H.O.G. members experienced, despite your absence (they really did miss you, though). Check out the "Made in America - Route 66" 2001, Chicago to California.

HOG Hospitality
Although Daytona and Sturgis are not hosted by Harley-Davidson or H.O.G., an exclusive area is set up to help you enjoy the events. At H.O.G. Hospitality, members receive a free commemorative H.O.G. event pin. Members are allowed to bring one guest into the hospitality area, however, only members receive the special event pin (must be present). No registration is required for participation.

Pin Stops
H.O.G. members can pick up a free commemorative pin (must be present to receive) and chat with H.O.G. staff at select motorcycle events.

U.S. State Rallies
H.O.G. state rallies offer great reasons to ride and experience the United States. These events are created, planned, and implemented by local H.O.G. members under the management of the national H.O.G. office. Dates and phone numbers for registration are regularly listed in Hog Tales and on www.hog.com. More information about HOG State Rallies can be found here.

Colorado ABATE Events

Colorado has an excellent ABATE organization. They always seem to have a local 'District' close by. ABATE district 13 is local to our area, and hold their monthly meetings at Jerry D's. Since this is the events and rides section, then I guess that you're wondering where the ABATE events page is?

Lets-Ride.com

This is a great site for finding events and rides throughout the united states. The link to motorcycle riding/events in Colorado web pages is:  http://www.lets-ride.com/event/colorado.htm

High Country HOG Chapter Activity Restrictions

High Country H.O.G. Chapter #422 activities are conducted primarily for the benefit of High Country H.O.G. Chapter members. Chapter activites are generally divided into these three categories, which can identified as follows:

Member Spotlight - Favorite Rides

Chapter members share their favorite rides

Steve (your webmaster) shares a ride that takes you on some of the beautiful front range (Colorado) back roads, passes Horse's Tooth reservoir, stops at a great place for brunch, before looping back through the mountains on Rist Canyon. To read more, follow this link

Donna (your LOH Officer) shares her first really long ride. It was the summer of 1992, when Donna took her first BIG motorcycle trip. From Michigan to Sturgis, Red Lodge, MT and Yellowstone. Read Donna's story here.

Chapter members are encouraged to share your favorite ride(s) with us, please with your ride info.

Member Spotlight - Events to Remember

Chapter members share their favorite Events

Twig (Rich), the High Country HOG Chapter Historian, shares a ride to the 2001 South Dakota State Rally. The weather changed frequently (Sept), and the "Deadwood Jam' was fantastic, follow this link to read more:

Read about 2003's High Country HOG's 2nd Annual Anal Pool Tournament

The 2nd year was even better... see the pictures here

The 2003 Second Annual Pool Shoot is history now. Somehow it was even better than last years. We easily doubled attendance, and with 2002 having about 14 players, this years full compliment of 32 made for a lot of exciting action. I guess word got out about last years good times. Registration starting at 1:00, the last game was played after 6:00pm. It made for a long day with good friends.

The Shirts were a big hit, better graphics and black with gray imaging. A few Large & X-Lrge are left and will be brought to the next chapter meeting.

Motorcycle videos were a hit too. All kinds of people in the bar were watching them, regular folk not with the shoot nor were they riders. I think we made a few friends of motorcycling while mingling with the general population. We also recruited a couple new members while there. Of course for those of us who rode and stayed late, snow was awaiting us on our seats when we left.

The Pool Tournament was a great hit, see the pictures here...

Well, our first ever chapter pool shoot was a raving success even though mother nature tempted many to ride instead of shoot. That's okay though. We had 22 people pay to play which covered the prizes. Probably another 20 folks were there to watch and have fun even though lots of folks stopped in before and/or after a ride on such a beautiful sunny February day.

First place went to chapter member & birthday boy Kris W (whose brother also got us the event T-shirts at a great rate and in less than ten days). Kris was hot, he also won the 50/50 drawing. Second place went to the Eagle Grill cook, known as Cookie of course. 3rd & 4th went to Tom & Dennis, guests. 5th - 8th drew for one cash prize, members Jim J, and 'jammer' along with Eagle Grill owner Charlie and guest Guy drew, Guy winning the cash.

All in all it was a great time, biker videos were on the closed circuit TV drawing attention away from the Daytona 500 by bar patrons who obviously long to be in the Wind. We still have event T-shirts in XL & Large which will be available for $12.00 at the planning meeting 27Feb and the chapter meeting 06Mar.

An interesting road, US-hwy 666, is in the news.

In a Feb. 17, 2003 RockyMountainNews Story, Kevin Flynn writes:

"The problem is the road is hilly and narrow with a lot of blind spots," said S.U. Mahesh, spokesman for the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department." ...

"Richard Weingroff, the unofficial historian of the Federal Highway Administration, wrote recently that the route of U.S. 666 was originally part of the rugged Navajo Trail."

read more here.

High CountryHOG's webmaster created these maps to help you see exactly where Satan's highway is. the general area. and a closeup of the road.
