High Country Colorado Chapter #422 Ladies
of Harley (LOH) Chili Cook-off
High Country Ladies of Harley has supported 'The Longmont Humane
Society' with one of their annual fund raisers. The decision to
start a fund raising event started after the 2004 Spring Bake Sale flopped.
(We raised about $40.00 in 6 hours).
The Ladies of Harley had a new officer in 2004, Stacie Ekberg who with
Teri Hull decided if the Ladies of Harley were going to support a charity
it should be one that was near and dear to their hearts. Teri proposed
a local Humane Society, Stacie had volunteered at the Longmont Humane
Society in the past and her husband Jerry was the Santa Claus each year
at LHS for pictures with the pets. So it was decided that the Longmont
Humane Society was going to be the recipient.
The idea of a Chili Cook-off and Dessert contest was agreed upon and
plans were under way for the first annual High Country Ladies of Harley
Chili Cook-Off. As the number of attendees at the LOH meetings increased
from 2 to a dozen, it was well under way.
Chili Cookoff by year;
In 2004 the Chili Cook-Off
raised around $246.00, not a big amount by any means, but the enthusiasm
and participation was great. The rivalry also started, the Best Tasting
Dessert contest was won by Karl Wiendhoff for his Apple Crisp Dessert,
Teri Hull won most creative for her bucket of Mud and Worms (Chocolate
Pudding, crushed Oreos and Gummy Worms). The Chili Winners were Mandy
Patron, Lee Hull and Karl Wiendhoff.
2005 almost tripled the
amount raised ($705.00) and had some returning winners 1 st Place Green
Chili: Bill Sherlock, 2nd Place Green Chili: Stacie Ekberg, 1st Place
Western Chili: Karl Wiendhoff, 2nd Place Western Chili: Teri Hull (even
though she will tell you it needed her husband Lee to come in and kick
it up a notch with his spices) Desserts: Most Creative-Teri Hull. See
the pictures here.
2005 also started the People’s Choice Awards which were given
to Rachel Mc Morris for Chili and to Ken Kline for Dessert.
A chapter challenge was given to the Thornton Chapter and one of the
winners Bill Sherlock was from this Chapter. Click

In 2006, the Chili Cookoff
was a great success. We doubled the amount we were able to donate to
the Longmont Humane Society from $705.00 last year to $1,500.00 this
year. Your support, help and participation are truly appreciated.

A poker run was added this year with the first stop at
the Starbucks at 17th and Pace, manage Carl Gruesner donated numerous
door prizes as well as sending employees to High Country to serve free
coffee that he donated through Starbucks. Additional stops were at the
Derby Grill in Berthoud and the Rocky Mountain Saloon on Highway 66.
