High Country Chapter Colorado
#422 - Buena Vista Ride
13-14
July 2002 - Fourth Annual Ride to Buena Vista - Ride report
by Donna Tucker Ladies of Harley Officer
The ride to Buena Vista was great!! Beautiful weather
and after Fairplay, traffic was light. We stopped in Grant to take a
break and got tied up with a lot of bikers on the"Ladies Run"
out of Fairplay.
We arrived at the KOA in Johnson Village in a timely manner, got settled
in & headed down the hill to the Coyote Cantina for great food and
cocktails. Some of the folks headed for Independence Pass but the weather
turned them around.
Later that afternoon we headed back to camp, having made a hot dog
and brat run into town. We all sat around Scott and Toni's cabin to
chat and cocktails. (their cabin was the closes to the restrooms) Later
on thanks to Kirk and Carol having their motor home in camp, we were
able to cook hot dogs and brats on the gas grill. The fire ban took
away our campfire but fun was had by all who went. Toni Mac gave us
all an example of how to get out of a gully in case of a flash flood.
As the sun came up on Sunday, the view from camp was great. From the
KOA you overlook the San Juan Valley with the Collegiate Peaks in the
distance. We all had breakfast at the Cook Shack in camp. We gased up
in Johnson Village and headed up north U.S. 24 to Leadville and beyond.
Hwy 24 north of Leadville is a treat if you like riding in the High
Country. At Minturn we got on I-70 east to U.S. 6 & stopped at Kermits
for food and refreshments, then the journey back to Longmont. All in
all it was a great weekend for all of us.
