Wow, what a great ride. October 2006 and weather in the 80's. A group of 19 dedicated High Country HOG Chapter members, and one small dog, gathered to enjoy one of the best LOH rides ever.
Carl, lead us on a scenic ride through some of Colorado's best back roads, through Berthoud, and around Horsetooth reservoir before heading into the mountains near Livermore. The mountain colors were changing, yellows. reds, as the temperature began dropping. I sure was glad that I wore my jacket.
The brochure says: "Lost in the Rocky Mountains, Red Feather Lakes is far from the noise and stress of the city. This group of 14 lakes is about 50 miles northwest of Fort Collins. Six of the lakes are open to the public for trout fishing and boating. Surrounded by the Roosevelt National Forest, it is an outdoor playground: horseback riding, fishing, hiking, biking, off-road vehicle roads, and hunting. This area is a photographers dream with an abundance wildflowers and wildlife. Look for elk, antelope, moose, mule deer, bears, quail, grouse, mountain lions, bighorn sheep and wild turkey. Wintertime brings cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers and ice-fishing enthusiasts to the area."
We saw deer, some of the greatest fall scenery, and had a fantastic lunch at Pot Belly's Deli where the owner greeted us in the parking lot, and then waved goodbye when we left. The ride back was great also, on the a way back, we were constantly getting warmer, and warmer. It was one of those days where I wished time could stand still so I could enjoy it forever.
