BROOMFIELD — The parking lot at Sun Microsystems was a sea of chrome and leather Sunday, as more than 600 motorcycle riders turned out for the "United Ride of Colorado" charity event.

People from all over the Denver metro area took part in the inaugural event, which raised more than $24,000 for children's charities such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Missing Children's Task Force.

Organizer Dave Przycocki said he was inspired to coordinate the event after taking part in last fall's nationwide United Ride, which benefited Sept. 11 victims in New York. After seeing riders from all over the state unite for the October ride, Przycocki said he wanted to bring everyone together for a Colorado cause.

"Everything we did (last year) went back to New York City," Przycocki said. "We wanted to do something local to help out the charities in Colorado."

Przycocki and other organizers attended rider group meetings from Cheyenne to Denver to get the word out. And Sun Microsystems' public relations team offered their services to help with publicity.

Vendors donated a percentage of their earnings to the children's charities, bands played for free and riders paid $10 to take part in Sunday's ride.

Riders met at Interlocken Business Park Sunday morning before heading out to Longmont via U.S. 36, Foothills Parkway and Colo. 119. The group turned east on Colo. 52 before heading back to Broomfield on U.S. 287.

Steve and Lisa Fox rode together Sunday on Steve's Harley Davidson Road King.

"It's for a good cause," Lisa said. "It shows people that bikers aren't all bad."

The Longmont couple said they often participate in local charity rides.

"Sept. 11 woke a lot of organizations and people up," Steve Fox said. "I hope a year from now that everyone still has the fervor to do it."
