High Country HOG Chapter Officers
Chapter
Webmaster - Steve
ORIGIN: IL, NJ, and WY before moving here 19 years ago FAVORITE PASTIME:
Riding, riding, riding...
I have been a HOG member for 9 years, starting with the Ft Collins
Chapter after purchasing my 98 FXSTC (Softtail Custom). Although I have
ridden motorcycles since I was 15. Riding a Harley is my favorite, although
riding across the open areas of Wyoming on a moto-cross bike is also
a lot of fun.
Family
As
we all get older, we realize how important family is. Now that
I'm a grandfather times 3, Mason, Logan and Jackson, are the light
of my life. I love spending time with them, Mason and I are best
buddies.

My Favorite Rides
Vern's
in LaPorte, CO for brunch
I love riding the back roads of Colorado, (I try to avoid the
Interstates and major roads when ever possible). My favorite ride
is to go to Vern's in LaPorte, Co for brunch. I'll start by heading
to Niwot at the 'Diagonal'. From there, I'll stay on CO CR31 (County
Road) past Hygiene, past Hwy66, to Woodland Rd, where I'll turn
left (North again). I guess that this is CO CR23. It travels through
some very beautiful back country with twists and turns. It eventually
meets up with CR8 a few miles west of Bert's Corner. I'll turn
left onto CR8 and only go a short distance till I come to the
Carter Lake turnoff. Riding up around Carter Lake is wonderful.
After exiting the Carter Lake area. I find myself on CR29 which
soon encounters Hwy34. Crossing Hwy34 I find some extremely scenic
country homes and more twists and turns. After a few more miles
I turn left towards Masonville on CR27. At Masonville, I turn
right and follow the hilly winding roads around Horse Tooth reservoir,
hugging the reservoir, still on CR23, until the roads descent
into Bellview. Turning right, Vern's and LaPorte are just a few
miles ahead. The food at Vern's is modest, but the price is great.
After a meal and some rest, I head back towards Bellview on CR52E,
and continue up Risk Canyon. This ride has more corners and winding
twisting turns than I could ever count. the already narrow county
road narrows even more as the climb to the top of the Rockies
continues. On the back side, of the mountain, the road dead ends
at the Stone Prairie Rd (CR27). Turn right and head back to Masonville.
Twist and turn, one after another. And yes, the road narrows even
more, in a great little canyon with babbling brook a few feet
away. Back at Masonville, again on familiar roads, I head back
tracking my journey. Back to Carter Lake, a cold one at the WindJammer
is always refreshing. |
My Favorite Rides - Mount Evans
Scenic
Mount Evans, 14,150' and only 85 miles away.
The 28-mile (28 miles from Idaho Springs, 85 miles from High Country
Harley-Davidson) Mount Evans Highway, the nation's highest paved
road and a national forest scenic byway, climbs from Idaho Springs
to the boulder-strewn 14,264-foot summit of Mount Evans. This
is a great summer ride for a hot day. When the temps are in the
80's and 90's in Longmont/Denver, on top of Mount Evans it can
be in the 40's and 50's so make sure take a jacket along. Read
more here (includes Maps and pictures).

National HOG ABCs Program
A
couple of years ago, I participated in the National HOG ABCs of
Touring, collecting 13 states and a total of 68 points. The idea
is to get a picture of yourself, your bike, and a current copy
of HOG Tails magazine in front of signs. Along the way, collecting
every county from A->Z, every city from A->Z, and as many
states as possible. It was a great experience. One of the weirdest
places that I got was Bala, Kansas. Other places were at the Colorado
State HOG Rally (which is an extra point), and Kremling, CO.

National Hog Mileage Program
As
a HOG member, its fun to take advantage of National HOG's programs.
One is the mileage contest. Patches are awarded on increments,
the first at 10,000 miles. Currently I have just over 98,000 on
my 98 Softtail custom, and hope to cross 100,000 very soon.

Hobbies and interests
When
the weather is cold and snowing, I like to snowboard at Copper
Mt. After years of skiing, my daughter convinced me to try snowboarding,
and now I have no intension of ever getting back on skis. Colorado
is great for its diversified activities. Its fun to take time
to enjoy the mountains and of course some white water rafting.
